Log 13: Level building in progress


Trifoil is an underdevelopment puzzle/exploration game which takes influence for The Witness and Knot Theory. It's due to be released late 2021 on itch.io and steam. Hi people I'm been busy building out the puzzle arrangement for one of the first levels players will encounter in Trifoil:

As you can see in the above area, there's the beginnings of the extra puzzle components including a player character, wires, barriers and a hallway/corridor area you can move around and explore.

My initial thought on implementing the levels is just to hard code everything in a level management script. But as I was adding more components I quickly realized this was not going to scale. So I took some time and refactored how the level code works and made sure everything could be data driven through the Unity editor. This will allow me to quickly refactor level layout and how puzzles relate to each other.

Speaking of puzzles there's 11 brand new puzzles in the level so far, I've only reused one puzzle from the prototype so far. I'm taking the feed back I got from the prototype and making sure I spend the time designing new quality puzzles. I'm really happy with the ones I have so far. They are far better sequenced and more interesting then most of the ones in the prototype and I'll keep that standard up. There will be no filler in this game.

I feel like I'm right in the middle of one of the first big phases of game content creation and just want to knuckle down and get on with it. So lets leave it there for this week.
