Discussion about puzzle design: Free Twists
The passed week and a half I've implemented the last "prototype" puzzle mechanic: Free Twists:
Free twists take the twist puzzle element from earlier in the game and flip it on it's head by allowing the player to place a fixed number of twists anywhere on the grid the line can intersect. The puzzle is only soled once all the twists are used. Twist element come in two types: left-down-right-up and left-up-right-down:
I need to make an important decision when allowing the player to use free twists. Do I have a set number of specific of left-down-right-up and a number of left-up-right-down or do I give the player a number of twists that can be used in either configuration? I decided to go with the latter Hence the cross twist overlays you see below:
My reason for choosing the more versatile free twists that can be used in any direction is it makes the puzzles more challenging. Giving the player more freedom in how they solve the puzzle adds permutations on possible solution attempts, hence more challenge. Of course it may be possible to design puzzles that become more difficult when given the fixed direction twists. But I'll explore this after the prototype is out.
The free twist mechanic is the last mechanic the prototype will contain. My next task is adding more puzzles. Once this is done a playable prototype with over 60 puzzles will be ready to show people. I'm excited how the game development is progressing. I'm really close to a very major milestone! If you're interested it checking out the prototype please get in touch.
