Decision to remove "visit all tiles" rule
While creating puzzles for the "Twists" area, I noticed that the "visit every tile" rule was:
- A potential source of frustration, as the player could finish the puzzle with all bridges and twists correctly crossed. But not have the puzzle solved, needing to go back and place extra filler squiggles to fill in the missing tiles.
- Reducing the need to for the player to make extra "filler squiggles" in the more complex puzzles resulted in more "on rails" puzzles. Meaning if you know the implicit rules for the puzzle, the solving it becomes a trivial matter of following the rules.
- The game is really about how the drawn line interacts with itself. Having the extra rule of needed to visit every tile did not align with what the game is about.
So the rule has been dropped and puzzles refactored. I think its the right decision as it will tighten gameplay and allow for more interesting puzzles.
In other news the "Twists" area for the prototype is finished and I've release a new prototype build to a small group of players. I'm looking forward to hearing what they think of the new mechanic. The next prototype milestone will include the first freestyle puzzles. I'm looking forward to them. If you interested it checking out the early build please get in touch.
